Position Summary

Waseca Public Schools is seeking an enthusiastic, dependable, and student-centered individual to serve as the Head Boys Varsity Hockey Coach for the Waseca Bluejays. The successful candidate will provide leadership and direction for all aspects of the boys hockey program while fostering a positive, competitive, safe, and educational environment that promotes excellence on the ice, in the classroom, and throughout the community.

The Head Coach is responsible for developing student-athletes through skill instruction, sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, and character development. The coach will establish and communicate a clear vision for the program, work collaboratively with assistant coaches and youth hockey leaders, and represent Waseca Public Schools with professionalism and integrity.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide leadership, organization, and supervision for the entire Waseca boys hockey program.
• Develop and implement effective practice plans that emphasize safety, skill development, proper technique, team concepts, and athlete growth.
• Provide instruction, encouragement, and constructive feedback during practices, competitions, and team activities.
• Prepare the varsity team for competition and oversee all aspects of game-day coaching and program operations.
• Supervise student-athletes and maintain a safe, organized, and productive practice and competition environment.
• Foster a positive team culture built on accountability, sportsmanship, respect, teamwork, leadership, and academic success.
• Promote the development of student-athletes both on and off the ice.
• Hire, supervise, support, and evaluate assistant coaches in collaboration with the Activities Director and school administration.
• Collaborate with assistant coaches and other program staff to promote consistency and continuity throughout all levels of the program.
• Build positive relationships with student-athletes, parents/guardians, school staff, officials, youth hockey representatives, and community members.
• Communicate clearly and consistently regarding team expectations, schedules, responsibilities, and program updates.
• Collaborate with the Waseca Hockey Association to support youth participation and the long-term development of the boys hockey program.
• Utilize the Bound platform for team communication, roster management, scores, statistics, and other required program information.
• Ensure compliance with all Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL), Big South Conference, and Waseca Public Schools policies and regulations.
• Oversee equipment inventories and the proper care, distribution, collection, and storage of uniforms and hockey equipment.
• Organize and lead the end-of-season awards program and complete all required postseason responsibilities.
• Participate in coaches' meetings, professional development opportunities, conference and section meetings, and other district activities as assigned.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of hockey, skill development, game strategy, and effective coaching techniques.
• Previous hockey coaching experience is required; successful varsity or head-coaching experience is preferred.
• Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to motivate and build positive relationships with student-athletes, parents, staff, youth hockey representatives, and community members.
• Ability to establish and communicate a clear vision for the boys hockey program.
• Ability to recruit, supervise, and collaborate effectively with assistant coaches and other program staff.
• Commitment to education-based athletics and the academic, athletic, social, and personal development of student-athletes.
• Ability to successfully complete all MSHSL coaching certification requirements and district employment requirements.

Compensation

Stipend position per district salary schedule.
