Job Description:
North Middlesex Regional High School is seeking a motivated and knowledgeable Assistant Varsity Boys Ice Hockey Coach to support the head coach in leading the boys varsity ice hockey program. The assistant coach will help with practice planning, player development, game preparation, and team management while promoting a positive and competitive team environment.
The ideal candidate will be passionate about teaching the game of hockey, committed to education-based athletics, and eager to mentor student-athletes both on and off the ice.
Key Responsibilities:
Practice & Game Support:
Assist the head coach in planning and conducting practices that emphasize skill development, conditioning, and team strategy.
Support game-day preparation, including warm-ups, bench management, and in-game adjustments.
Provide position-specific instruction (e.g., forwards, defensemen, or goalies) as directed by the head coach.
Player Development & Mentorship:
Work closely with student-athletes to improve their technical and tactical hockey skills.
Foster leadership, accountability, and resilience among players.
Encourage athletes to uphold strong academic and athletic standards.
Team Culture & Environment:
Help build a positive, respectful, and competitive team culture.
Promote good sportsmanship, teamwork, and pride in representing North Middlesex.
Support the head coach in setting and enforcing team rules and expectations.
Collaboration & Communication:
Maintain strong communication with the head coach, athletes, parents, and athletic department staff.
Collaborate with coaching staff to align practice plans, strategies, and team goals.
Support team logistics, including equipment management and travel coordination.
Safety & Compliance:
Ensure all practices and games prioritize the health and safety of players.
Follow proper concussion management and injury prevention protocols.
Comply with all North Middlesex, MIAA, and NFHS rules, regulations, and eligibility requirements.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
Previous coaching or playing experience in ice hockey with strong knowledge of the game’s fundamentals and strategies.
Ability to mentor and motivate student-athletes, emphasizing growth both on and off the ice.
Strong organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
Must meet all district, NFHS, and MIAA coaching requirements, including:
NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching
NFHS Concussion in Sports
First Aid & CPR Certification
MIAA Coaching Education Program
CORI/SORI Background Check
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous coaching experience at the high school or youth level.
Collegiate or high-level playing experience.
Ability to work collaboratively with the head coach and athletic staff to build a successful program.
Experience supporting student-athletes in balancing academics and athletics.
