The City of Gunnison’s Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a dependable and safety-minded Zamboni Driver/Skate Guard to help keep our three skating surfaces in top shape while ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors.
General Purpose: | ||
The Zamboni Driver/Skate Guard is responsible for maintaining the ice on three skating surfaces in Jorgensen Park. This person will follow general maintenance procedures of the skating facility, sharpen skates, and monitor the use and behavior at the skating complex. | ||
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: | ||
The primary purpose of this employee is to resurface the ice here at the Jorgensen Ice Complex. Resurfacing includes helping to maintain the proper ice depth on the indoor rink, preparing the outdoor rink including crack filling/flooding as necessary, and maintaining the pond including removing snow and resurfacing as necessary. The Zamboni Driver is responsible for enforcing the rink schedules as assigned by the Facility Manager & Parks Director. The Zamboni Driver is responsible for end of night duties including leaving the ice sheet in good condition for the next day including building ice as necessary for proper ice depth, end of evening maintenance/storage of machines, taking trash out of rink area, properly cleaning locker rooms, and locking up the facility. The Zamboni driver is also required to help sharpen customers and rental skates as necessary. The Zam driver is required to help with all snow and ice removal, here at the ice complex. | ||
Other Duties and Responsibilities: | ||
Along with the rest of the staff the Zamboni driver is responsible for monitoring behavior in and around the indoor and outdoor ice rinks and locker rooms. If any customer behavior is found to be inappropriate, the Zam Driver is required to approach the individuals, call dispatch or notify the Facility Manager. | ||
Job Qualifications | ||
Required Education and Experience: | To be qualified for the job the applicant must be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license. The applicant must have a strong mechanical aptitude and be competent with vehicles of different types. A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred. The applicant must be detail oriented and very aware of their immediate work surroundings. Safety is one of the primary concerns that the Zamboni driver must look for. | |
Other Necessary Requirements: | The ideal candidate will have previous ice maintenance experience. If employed the candidate will be required to complete the SIRO course provided by US Ice Rinks Association. | |
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: | Knowledge: The applicant must have a strong mechanical aptitude and be good with different types of vehicles. Skill: The applicant must have full left and right arm and leg function and the ability to walk, shovel, and lift. Ability: The applicant must be sharp mentally and aware of immediate surroundings and potential safety concerns English Language Comprehension - Requires the ability to listen to, read, understand and communicate the English language so that others can understand. This must be done both orally and in writing, at the level appropriate for the position held. | |
Working Conditions | ||
Work Environment: | The work environment for the Zam Driver includes working late hours, being able to withstand cold temperatures for long periods of time. The work environment can get very busy; the candidate must be able to keep an eye on the crowd and react appropriately when necessary. Candidates should expect to work evenings, weekends and holidays during our biggest programing. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. | |
Physical Activities: | Working long hours mostly, late in the day is required. Being able to lift heavy hockey nets and close heavy Zam gates is required. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. | |
Tools and Equipment Used: | Ice Resurfacing machines, edger machines, snowplows on pick-up trucks, power tools, skate sharpening machines, shovels and ice chippers. | |
