Portledge School was founded in 1965 and is located on the beautiful North Shore of Long Island. Approximately fifty minutes from NYC by train, Portledge is nestled on a pastoral 63-acre tree-lined campus that is known for its cherry blossoms in spring. Portledge School seeks an enthusiastic, student-centered Hockey Coach to lead our Grades 5–8 coeducational hockey program. The successful candidate will create a positive, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate environment that supports student-athletes with a wide range of skating and hockey abilities. This role is part time, temporary, seasonal and reports to the Director of Athletics.
This position is ideal for a coach who is passionate about skill development, fostering a love of the game, and helping young athletes build confidence, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
Plan and lead engaging practices that accommodate varying levels of skating and hockey experience.
Create a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for all student-athletes.
Teach and reinforce fundamental hockey skills, including skating, puck handling, passing, shooting, positioning, and game awareness.
Develop practice plans that challenge experienced players while supporting beginners.
Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, respect, and positive character development.
Supervise student-athletes during practices, games, travel, and team activities.
Communicate effectively with students, parents, and the Athletic Department.
Support the overall mission and philosophy of Portledge Athletics.
Ensure compliance with all school and safety regulations.
Collaborate with other coaches and athletic staff to support athlete development across all levels of the program.
Provide meaningful mentorship to student-athletes, fostering growth both on and off the court.
Previous coaching and/or playing experience in hockey.
Ability to teach and develop athletes with diverse skill levels.
Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive team culture.
Experience working with middle school-aged students preferred.
Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).
Ability to serve as a positive role model and mentor for student-athletes.
Season:
Season will start approximately around November 1, 2026 and end approximately around March 15, 2027.
