Job Description:

North Middlesex Regional High School is seeking a dedicated and experienced Head Varsity Boys Ice Hockey Coach to lead our high school program. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the varsity ice hockey team, including player development, practice and game planning, team management, and fostering a culture of sportsmanship and excellence.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership skills, a deep knowledge of the game, and a commitment to education-based athletics that promotes the academic, athletic, and personal growth of student-athletes.

Key Responsibilities:

Coaching & Player Development:

Design and implement practice plans that focus on skill development, game strategy, conditioning, and teamwork.

Provide instruction to improve fundamental hockey skills such as skating, stickhandling, shooting, and defensive play.

Mentor student-athletes, promoting leadership, discipline, and accountability on and off the ice.

Game Preparation & Strategy:

Develop game strategies, analyze opponents, and make in-game adjustments to maximize team performance.

Oversee team lineups, rotations, and substitutions.

Ensure athletes are mentally and physically prepared for competition.

Team Culture & Leadership:

Foster a positive, inclusive, and competitive team environment that emphasizes respect, sportsmanship, and pride in representing North Middlesex.

Build a strong sense of community and identity within the program.

Establish clear expectations for behavior, commitment, and teamwork.

Collaboration & Communication:

Work closely with assistant coaches, athletic trainers, and school staff to support player needs and program goals.

Maintain consistent communication with parents, caregivers, and the athletic department regarding schedules, player development, and program updates.

Encourage athletes to balance academics and athletics, supporting their overall success.

Program Development:

Oversee all aspects of the varsity boys ice hockey program, including player recruitment, development, and retention.

Support the growth of lower-level teams (JV and youth feeder programs) to ensure a sustainable pipeline of talent.

Promote interest in the program within the school and local community.

Safety & Compliance:

Prioritize athlete safety through proper instruction, use of protective equipment, and adherence to MIAA rules and regulations.

Ensure compliance with district, MIAA, and NFHS policies, including eligibility, academic requirements, and sportsmanship guidelines.

Follow concussion management protocols and injury prevention practices.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:

Previous coaching experience, preferably at the high school or collegiate level, with strong knowledge of hockey fundamentals, rules, and strategies.

Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and motivate student-athletes.

Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.

Ability to foster academic and athletic balance for student-athletes.

Must meet all district, NFHS, and MIAA coaching requirements, including:

NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching

NFHS Concussion in Sports

First Aid & CPR Certification

MIAA Coaching Education Program

CORI/SORI Background Check

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Education, Sports Management, or a related field.

Previous playing experience at the collegiate or high school varsity level.

Experience building and sustaining a competitive program.

Strong connections with youth hockey programs to encourage player development.
