Description

The Youth Hockey Instructor is responsible for delivering high‑quality on‑ice instruction to players of varying ages and skill levels in a fun, safe, and developmentally appropriate environment. This role focuses on teaching skating fundamentals, hockey skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship while maintaining a positive and encouraging atmosphere that aligns with the organization’s coaching philosophy.

 

Key Responsibilities

On‑Ice Instruction

  • Teach skating fundamentals including balance, edges, stopping, turning, and stride development.
  • Instruct core hockey skills such as puck handling, passing, shooting, and positional awareness.
  • Run structured, high‑energy drills that promote both skill development and enjoyment of the sport.
  • Adapt teaching methods to different ages, learning styles, and ability levels.

Player Development

  • Provide individual feedback and positive reinforcement to support confidence and growth.
  • Assess player progress and adjust drills or groupings as needed to ensure an appropriate learning environment.
  • Encourage teamwork, effort, sportsmanship, and respect for coaches, teammates, opponents, and officials.

Safety & Supervision

  • Maintain a safe on‑ice environment through clear communication, attentive supervision, and proper demonstration of skills.
  • Ensure all players have proper equipment and are following safety guidelines.
  • Follow organization, rink, and USA Hockey safety and conduct standards, including SafeSport expectations.

Program Support

  • Assist with class setup, equipment needs, and ice organization.
  • Communicate effectively with parents regarding class focus, expectations, and player progress (as needed).
  • Collaborate with fellow instructors and program leadership to ensure consistency across classes.
  • Serve as a positive ambassador for the program and help promote continued participation.

Professional Conduct

  • Arrive on time, prepared, and dressed appropriately for on‑ice instruction.
  • Model professionalism, enthusiasm, and a strong work ethic.
  • Maintain compliance with background checks, required training modules, and coaching certifications if applicable.


Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Strong skating and hockey skills with the ability to demonstrate fundamentals clearly.
  • Prior coaching or instructional experience preferred, especially with youth athletes.
  • Ability to lead a group with confidence, positivity, and patience.
  • Must enjoy working with children and creating an encouraging learning environment.
  • Reliable, punctual, and committed to the success of the program.
