    Description:

    Ā 

    The Assistant Varsity/Junior Varsity Coach is responsible for helping each participating student achieve a high level of skill, an appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship, and an increased level of self-esteem. The Assistant Varsity/Junior Varsity Coach reports to the Head Coach and Athletic Director.Ā 

    Ā 

    Responsibilities:

    Ā 

    A. Administrative ResponsibilitiesĀ 

    Ā 

    Responsible with Head Coach and Athletic Director for all matters relating to the organization, administration and philosophy of the sport under his/her direction.Ā 

    Ā 

    Serves in a leadership capacity to the community program.

    Ā 

    Assists the Head Coach in overseeingĀ the high school program in his/her sport.

    Ā 

    Adheres to the MIAA Coaches Guidebook and BPS Coaches Handbook; Acts as a positive role model on and off the court/field/site, etc

    Ā 

    Coaches individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport involved.

    Ā 

    Maintains competency in MIAA rules, event procedures, coaching techniques and general information about all aspects of the sport.

    Ā 

    Works closely with the Head Coach and Athletic Director to schedule BPS facility use.

    Ā 

    Secures the Athletic Director’s approval before scheduling non-school facilities for off-campus activities.

    Ā 

    Works with the coaches and/or Athletic Director to plan transportation and appropriate supervision at away contests in compliance with district travel policy and guidelines.Ā 

    Ā 

    B. Record Keeping ResponsibilitiesĀ 

    Ā 

    Maintains an accurate and current team & program roster and submits copies to the Athletic Office.

    Ā 

    Develops a consistent and positive communications procedure through the school and media to inform the parents and the general public about his/her sport.

    Ā 

    Maintains accurate statistics, records, and results of the season.Ā 

    Ā 

    Arranges for the presentation of team awards through the Athletic Office.Ā 

    Ā 

    Records, submits and maintains necessary MIAA & BPS forms and paperwork.Ā 

    Ā 

    C. Athletic Behavior/Eligibility ResponsibilitiesĀ 

    Ā 

    Enforces all rules of the MIAA related to his/her sport.Ā 

    Ā 

    Enforces and models discipline and sportsmanlike behavior at all times, and establishes and oversees penalties for breach of such standards by individual students.

    Ā 

    Ensures that no bullying/hazing occurs in his/her sport.

    Ā 

    Establishes performance criteria for participation in interscholastic competition in his/her sport.Ā 

    Ā 

    Checks with Athletic Office on individual athlete’s eligibility.Ā 

    Ā 

    Establishes written program expectations.Ā 

    Ā 

    Enforces school’s academic expectations; partners with faculty to ensure that student-athletes are academically engaged and successful

    Ā 

    D. Injury/SafetyĀ 

    Ā 

    Cooperates with the Head Coach and Athletic Director to verify that no participant is issued equipment or allowed to practice until his/her physical examination and Baseline concussion testing has been completedĀ 

    Ā 

    Oversees the safety condition of the facility or area in which assigned sport is conducted at all times that students are present.Ā 

    Ā 

    Enforces rules and regulations concerning conditioning of players and their health and safety.Ā 

    Ā 

    Reports injuries to the athletic trainer through personal communication, as well as completing and submitting incident reports to the athletic trainer and Athletic Office.Ā 

    Ā 

    Exercises great care in dealing with all injuries and particularly those that are of a serious nature. In all cases, the coach should assure that the injured athlete is receiving competent medical care. Following injuries of a serious or prolonged nature, the coach should make sure there is a signed approval of the doctor and parent before the student-athlete is allowed to participate in athletic activities.Ā 

    Ā 

    Provides supervision of all athletes until they have left the building and/or site.Ā 

    Ā 

    Ensures that all windows, doors, and gates are locked in any area that has been used.Ā 

    Ā 

    E. Team ActivitiesĀ 

    Ā 

    Plans all practice sessions and competitions, and supervises out-of-season conditioning program.Ā 

    Ā 

    Ensures a positive environment free of hazing, harassment, bullying and intimidating language and behaviors.Ā 

    Ā 

    F. Other dutiesĀ 

    Ā 

    Performs other duties as assigned.Ā 

    Ā 

    Additional Information:

    Ā 

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred or RequiredĀ 

    Ā 

    Valid teaching certificate and a bachelor’s degree preferred.Ā 

    Ā 

    First aid and CPR training required.Ā 

    Ā 

    MIAA’s Coaches Education Certification Level 1 or 2 certification required of new Varsity Head Coaches (effective 2016-2017).Ā 

    Ā 

    Experience in teaching, coaching, and sports medicine preferred.Ā 

    Ā 

    Effective oral and written communication skills.

    Ā 

    Demonstrate success in area of application.

    Ā 

    Sport specific certifications preferred .

    Ā 

    Playing experience preferred.
