Job Description:
North Middlesex Regional High School is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Junior Varsity (JV) Ice Hockey Coach to lead and develop the junior varsity hockey program. The JV coach will focus on teaching fundamental skills, fostering teamwork, and preparing student-athletes for future success at the varsity level.
The ideal candidate will provide a positive and structured learning environment, encourage personal growth, and instill values of sportsmanship, discipline, accountability, and commitment both on and off the ice.
Plan and conduct practices that emphasize hockey fundamentals, conditioning, systems, and team play.
Provide individualized instruction to help athletes strengthen skating, puck handling, shooting, positioning, and defensive techniques.
Develop athletesβ understanding of game strategy, teamwork, and hockey IQ.
Prepare athletes to progress into the varsity program by building a strong foundation of technical and tactical skills.
Game Preparation & Management:
Organize line combinations, rotations, and in-game adjustments to maximize player development and team performance.
Ensure athletes are prepared mentally and physically for competition.
Model and promote sportsmanship and respect for officials, opponents, teammates, and the game.
Team Culture & Player Development:
Create a positive and supportive team environment where all players feel valued and motivated.
Encourage responsibility, discipline, leadership, accountability, and resilience among student-athletes.
Reinforce the importance of balancing academics, athletics, and personal growth.
Support the overall philosophy and expectations of the North Middlesex ice hockey program.
Communication & Collaboration:
Communicate regularly with student-athletes, parents, and the varsity coaching staff regarding expectations, schedules, and team development.
Work collaboratively with the head varsity coach to ensure consistency in philosophy, culture, and skill progression throughout the program.
Collaborate with athletic trainers and school staff to support athlete well-being and performance.
Safety & Compliance:
Prioritize player safety through proper instruction, use of protective equipment, and reinforcement of safe play.
Follow concussion management and injury prevention protocols.
Ensure compliance with all MIAA, NFHS, league, and North Middlesex policies and eligibility requirements.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
Previous coaching and/or playing experience in ice hockey.
Strong understanding of hockey fundamentals, systems, strategies, and rules.
Ability to mentor, teach, and motivate student-athletes in a positive and constructive manner.
Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
Must meet all district, NFHS, and MIAA coaching requirements, including:
NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching
NFHS Concussion in Sports
First Aid & CPR Certification
MIAA Coaching Education Program
CORI/SORI Background Check
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous coaching experience at the high school or youth hockey level.
Collegiate or high-level playing experience.
Experience developing student-athletes for higher levels of competition.
Ability to build a team culture centered on growth, sportsmanship, accountability, and academic success.
