Job Description:

North Middlesex Regional High School is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Junior Varsity (JV) Boys Ice Hockey Coach to lead and develop the junior varsity hockey program. The JV coach will focus on teaching fundamental skills, fostering teamwork, and preparing student-athletes for future success at the varsity level.

The ideal candidate will provide a positive and structured learning environment, encourage personal growth, and instill values of sportsmanship, discipline, and commitment both on and off the ice.

Key Responsibilities:

Coaching & Skill Development:

Plan and conduct practices that emphasize hockey fundamentals, conditioning, and team play.

Provide individualized instruction to help athletes strengthen skating, stickhandling, shooting, and defensive techniques.

Prepare athletes to progress into the varsity program by building a solid foundation of technical and tactical skills.

Game Preparation & Management:

Organize lineups, rotations, and in-game adjustments to maximize player development and team performance.

Ensure athletes are well-prepared mentally and physically for competition.

Model and promote good sportsmanship and respect for officials, opponents, and teammates.

Team Culture & Player Development:

Create a positive and supportive team environment where all players feel valued and motivated.

Encourage responsibility, discipline, leadership, and accountability among players.

Reinforce the importance of balancing academic responsibilities with athletics.

Communication & Collaboration:

Communicate regularly with players, parents, and the varsity head coach regarding team progress, expectations, and schedules.

Work in alignment with the head varsity coach to ensure consistency of philosophy, goals, and skill development across the program.

Collaborate with athletic trainers and staff to support athlete health and performance.

Safety & Compliance:

Prioritize player safety through proper instruction, use of protective equipment, and enforcement of safe play.

Follow concussion management and injury prevention protocols.

Ensure compliance with MIAA, NFHS, and North Middlesex policies and eligibility requirements.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:

Previous coaching or playing experience in ice hockey.

Strong understanding of hockey fundamentals, game strategies, and rules.

Ability to mentor, teach, and motivate student-athletes in a positive manner.

Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.

Must meet all district, NFHS, and MIAA coaching requirements, including:

NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching

NFHS Concussion in Sports

First Aid & CPR Certification

MIAA Coaching Education Program

CORI/SORI Background Check

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous coaching experience at the high school or youth hockey level.

Collegiate or high-level playing experience.

Experience developing young athletes for higher levels of competition.

Ability to create a team culture that emphasizes growth, sportsmanship, and academic success.
